Published: ‘In Love With Me – Wedding Stationary Design’

My work has recently been published in a book from Hong Kong titled ‘In Love With Me – Wedding Stationary Design’. Sweet!

Never Forget 9/11

In 2001, I was a second year student in the Graphic Design program at Algonquin College. A few weeks after 9/11, we were assigned a small project to create an illustration using a barcode. There were barcodes made out of everything: animals, people, cars, food, etc. With the tragedy of 9/11 so fresh in my mind, I turned two barcodes on their side and used the numbers as the exact date and time that each tower was hit.

Bueller?… Bueller?

2012 was a great year. I participated in various art shows; created posters for Mondo, Acme Archives and DHM; attended New York Comic Con for a poster signing; and even managed to win a few awards. I was really killing it.

Enter 2013.

Bueller?… Bueller?

It’s been close to a full year since I’ve released any new artwork.

So what’s the deal? Where have I been?

Truth be told: I needed the break.

I didn’t recognize the signs at the time, but I started to burn myself out. The toll of working so many ‘side projects’ while simultaneously working advertising contracts caught up with me.

What started as a hobby, suddenly grew into a second full-time job.

Design. Print. Sign. Pack. Mail. Repeat.

I was working ALL the time. It became too much for me to handle by myself.

Subsequently, I backed out of all art shows and poster commitments.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to design posters for a living; but sadly, this avenue of my career never reached the point where it could pay for all the bills.

That’s not to say 2013 has been a quiet year; on the contrary. I actually managed to cross off two major milestones: I got married and bought a house. Now on weekends, instead of crushing it on my computer, I’m crushing my wallet at Home Depot.

I’ve also taken the time to explore different avenues of my career.

Over the summer, I took on a Design Director role at Tribal DDB. I managed a design team on digital projects for brands like McDonalds, AVEENO and Canadian Tire. It was a huge learning experience.

Recently, I came back to work with my friends at Juniper Park. I’m on various accounts, including eos, where I’ve been designing patterns and illustrations for different types of packaging (dedicated post to come).

Do I miss art shows and licensed posters? Definitely.

Will I get back into it in the near future? Absolutely.

In fact, I have a handful of ideas that are waiting to come to life; including one big idea that is starting to take shape.

That being said, 2014 is quickly approaching. I look forward to starting a new year with something that I lost focus of: BALANCE.

I want to continue to explore different paths of this crazy industry, but more importantly, I want to live. I need to make more time for myself; to relax and recharge, to read a book or two, and spend more time with family and friends.

Ferris Bueller said it best:

Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
