LSOH Creative Process

A friend recently asked me to share a bit of my creative process; specifically with the ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ print. Depending on timelines, it varies from project to project, but this is how I tackled this design.

I always start by creating an inspiration board.

Inspiration Board

I roughly sketch as many ideas as I can think of until I’m happy with one concept.

Rough Idea

Using Illustrator, I create all of my elements as vector objects to start experimenting with layout, color & typography.

Once I decide on overall direction of the poster, I redraw everything from scratch; this time with more precision.

Leaf Detail

Once the main work is done, I start refining typography.

Lastly, I add all the page detail (aged effects).

Crazy 4 Cult: LSOH

This is my contribution to G1988′s Crazy 4 Cult show; based off one of my all time favorites, Little Shop of Horrors.

I wanted to try something a little different (than my usual bright colored artwork); something a bit more dark and gritty. After all, the movie is about a man eating plant!

This is how I imagine the film if they ever released an ’unrated director’s cut’. Haha. I think my main inspiration came from Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse movie posters.
